"When are you speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only a single issue: I also longs to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. Multiple celebrated supporters have openly coveted the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey doing sets at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the most iconic bands, they're a close unit. Their music videos frequently depict them walking in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such unfettered joy you find yourself thinking, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to form a group."

"And thus all is invited to be the next Haim sister."

Award Milestone

The band are speaking from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "However we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The album came out of a time of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The words detail breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That developed toughness required a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The band's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

Yet the band will forever be their number one commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
