At least 13 individuals perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
